chip off the old block

The cell rings at work yesterday afternoon.... caller ID shows Carrie's cell, so I pick up.

"What's up?"

"Hi daddy."

"Hi Meg! How are you?"

By this time, Carrie's trying not to laugh in the background.

"Tchek."

"What's that? You want to watch Trek?"

"Tchek. Heh."

Carrie, in the background: "You can watch Trek with Daddy when he gets home, sweetheart."

"Byeeeee."

"Bye Meg."

I just about fell over. My 18-month-old wants to watch ST: TAS with me. Made me proud to be a dad.... and it beats watching Elmo all day.

So I went home and watched "Tchek" with my daughter. Mind you, we got almost through one episode, and she pointed at the TV and said "Elmo," but it was a small victory for Daddy.

We'll get her educated yet.

amusements at Christmas time

This Christmas, I had lots of fun with the family. My folks were in town, and they spent lots of time doting on the little one. Meanwhile, the focus shifted away from the loot, and onto the squirt, where it should be.

Anyway, there were some cool things to be had this year, such as Star Trek: The Animated Series and Aeon Flux on DVD:

... and then there were the amusing things. In with the gift certificate that purchased the above was the remains of 30 years of DuPont marketing genius. One of the most entertaining gifts (soon to be gracing the rear end of a Goodwill Store shopper near you, I'm sure) was two of the following:

I'm sure the Australians for whom they were originally made thought they were just the bomb when they first came out, so I'm sure someone will enjoy them about as much as I enjoy this picture... hee-hee.

Now I've seen everything?

An old college buddy pointed out that Jones (purveyors of seriously good cream soda, among other things) came up with a Holiday Pack for this year that might be worth trying, if for no other reason than the causes it's supporting.

Now I've seen everything? Somehow I doubt it.

Боже мой...

While looking for some ideas for sites that use Drupal tonight, I stumbled upon Drupal Россия, and learned quickly that (a)I am way out of practice with reading Russian, and (b)when I actually was in practice, I wasn't all that technical. So... not only do I have a lot to learn about Drupal, but I have a lot of technical Russian to catch up on if I ever want and/or need to appear reasonably proficient in the language when doing things other than watching traditional Soviet film or discussing the oh-so-interesting development of the Cyrillic alphabet due to the glorious missions of Sts. Cyril and Methodius...

wow...

Now, Carrie said she'd actually like me to fold her shirts if I could do it like this.

decisions, decisions...

I've been thinking for a while about actually posting the workouts I'm making up and/or doing on the front page of the site to get them more exposure... but I've held off on doing it to keep the DrCoachChris section somewhat separate... but now that I'm in the water a little more regularly, I think it makes sense. So, any workouts I actually like, or that I think will have sufficient geek factor for coaches or just geeks, will go on the front page as well, starting today.

Of course that also means that I don't have to worry about the default blog entry creation rules in Drupal (which I have set to "promoted to front page"), but that's another whole level of lazy.

Enjoy :-)

busy enough...

You can tell life's been busy... I haven't posted here in quite a while. At least it's a good kind of busy.

I love being an engineer. Look, ma... no points!

the little things...

You know, Carrie will probably kill me for writing here that she's kinda tone deaf. It's interesting, though: when she's singing Meg to sleep, it just sounds soft and beautiful, and spot on (not something I entirely expected, based on the above). Oh well... it's interesting what parenthood will do to people.

maybe this one?

OK... so I love the interface in Mac OS X, and I couldn't resist taking the Drupal aquasoft theme and cannibalizing it a little for my own purposes. This will suit me just fine for a while, I think. Hope my (very small number of) readers like it. If not, oh well.

new look and feel.... again

So I've been working on a number of concepts for the site, but the truth is that I think they all suck. Now that I'm getting more of a clue on how the templates work, I may have a fighting chance to put something together that I like.. but don't count on it happening any time in the very near future, especially because I have a feeling that the first real overhaul will happen on the ILMSA site (and that doesn't even count the stuff I still have to do for OSLC.

We'll see...
